Obesity Epidemic Affects Millions

According to the World Heath Organization, globally there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them obese. During the past 20 years there has also been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. Approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million obese, and 9 million severely obese. According to the US Surgeon General, in the USA the number of overweight children has doubled and the number of overweight adolescents has tripled since 1980.

Setting Realistic Weight Loss Goals

The U.S. Surgeon General’s prescription for health includes moderate physical activity on most days of the week of at least 30 minutes per day and eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day (and reasonable portion sizes). The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) approach to weight loss and maintenance is similar to the U.S. Surgeon General’s prescription for health as it focuses on adopting healthy habits, but it also recommends an assessment of behavior and environment. Recording diet and exercise patterns each day is a good way to begin this assessment.

Eat (and Enjoy) Your Vegetables

The average American gets a total of just three servings of fruits and vegetables a day. A 14-year Harvard-based study found the higher the average daily intake of fruits and vegetables, the lower the chances of developing cardiovascular disease. Other benefits include a decreased chance of stroke, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, the prevention of some types of cancers, intestinal ailments and improved eye health. Depending on one’s caloric intake, five to thirteen servings of fruits and vegetables a day are recommended.
